The History of Wellington

Wellington itself stands between the River Tone and the Blackdown Hills and is steeped in history with associations to the Iron Duke of Wellington who is renowned for his military exploits. The well known landmark, Wellington Monument was built to celebrate the Duke's victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. Wellington is also mentioned in the Doomsday Book and later featured in the defeat of the Monmouth Uprising. The town centre is now retained as a Conservation Area retaining much of its rural charm with a range of specialist shops selling local produce.

Situation

Wellington also enjoys excellent access to the West County and the rest of the UK. The nearby M5 is the main link between the West County and the Midlands and Taunton can be reached in 15 minutes, Exeter in 30 minutes and Bristol in 60 minutes. Both Exeter and Bristol have their own airports offering an ever growing selection of national and international flights. There is a main line railway station at Taunton and a train trip to London can be made in less than 2 hours.
