History.
Landford Manor has an intriguing and rich history, with connections to several notable figures. The manor’s origins, tracing back to the 13th century, suggest it has long been a place of historical significance. It’s fascinating that John Davenant, the Bishop of Salisbury, once resided there, alongside the Countess Frances Elizabeth Nelson, a prominent figure due to her marriage to the second Earl Nelson, a relative of Lord Nelson.
The original structure, dating back to around 1600, and the alterations during Queen Anne's reign demonstrate how the building evolved with shifting architectural styles. These changes were continued in the 18th and 19th centuries, as each new occupant added their own imprint to the building.
Sir Alfred Mond’s ownership in the early 20th century marked another significant chapter. As Lord Melchet of Landford, his sale of the manor to Sir Frederick Preston KBE in 1929 saw substantial modernization and beautification of the grounds. Preston's efforts to enhance the estate’s gardens and install features like tennis courts and a water garden show how the manor not only served as a historical residence but also a luxurious country retreat.
