What the vendor has mentioned about the property's history:
The house was in the possession of the Bledisloe family of Lydney Park Estate for over 200 years, originally a 2 bedroom cottage with a cider press and mill at the rear, hence its eventual name of "Milling House". Part of the millstone is in the garden beneath the 200+ year old mulberry bush which still crops well.
When Ewart Horsfall, the previous Lord Bledisloe's best friend and rowing partner at university, (also an Olympic Gold and Bronze medallist) passed away in 1974 his Lordship offered the cottage to his widow Betty Horsfall.
It was Betty who more than tripled the cottage footprint to what you see today. I still have, and will leave with the house, many of the original architects drawings and internal details.
Betty was a well known gardener and writer, and completed over 17 trips to Russia collecting rare and unusual plants, many of which are planted in the orchard next to Milling House. Betty described it as her arboretum, the orchard is still owned by the Estate.
Betty spoke fluent Russian and inherited a large number of Russian Icons from her father which were displayed around the house along with an impressive array of silver, hence the baize lined and alarmed "Butler's Pantry".
On passing the majority of her estate was left to Liverpool University and used to create the "Betty Horsfall Gallery".
