Additional Info
Lamb Close House has a rich history since it’s original construction as a farmhouse in the early 18th Century. It has only been owned by two families in the last 270 years.
The farmhouse was originally acquired by Sir Matthew Lamb of Melbourne Hall, Derbyshire, as a shooting lodge and was leased to the Barber family in 1753. The Barber family of Barber Walker & Co. were prominent colliery proprietors of the time along with the Walker family.
In 1894, following the death of Thomas Barber a new 30 year lease was established between Earl Cowper’s family and the Barbers at an annual rent of 65 pounds. Under the Barbers, Lamb Close House was significantly remodeled and extended during the mid and late 19th century adding onto the original farmhouse on three sides with a gardeners cottage, a children’s wing and spacious living and formal areas to the front. The family finally acquired the freehold in 1915 and shortly after, more remodeling renovations were commenced with the addition of more bedrooms, enlarged drawing room, enlarged billiard room and large dining room complete with sprung floor. The house now stands as a large imposing comfortable family home complete with extensive formal gardens overlooking the 42 acres of Moorgreen Reservoir.
