In addition, there is a delightful enclosed terrace area suitable for a table and chairs. The rear garden is accessible via French doors from both the garden room and the sitting room. St Georges Place occupies a delightful, quiet situation on the edge of this historic Cinque Port town within walking distance of the excellent and diverse selection of shops, pubs, restaurants and amenities in one direction, or Sandwich Bay to the East. Sandwich has existed since at least 664 AD and was one of the first towns in England to have a mayor and borough status. It was, for several centuries, the largest and most important port in England and in mediaeval times was one of the five Cinque main ports, along with Dover, Hythe, Romney and Hastings responsible for the defence of the South-East coast and the Channel. Today, Sandwich retains much of the charm and character of its historic past, with its picturesque streets, jettied timber houses, Dutch gables, river frontage, ancient pubs, stores, quay gate and toll-bridge. Sandwich Bay, together with The Royal St George's golf links, the home each decade of The Open Championship, together with other leading golf courses including Princes and Royal Cinque Ports (both former Open Championship venues) can be reached easily on foot or by car, whilst the Cathedral city of Canterbury with its many cultural interests, restaurants, schools, colleges and two universities, is about 12 miles distant. From Sandwich there are connecting train services to London (St Pancras) and Charing Cross, whilst the A299 Thanet Way facilitates rapid access to the M2 motorway. For channel crossings the port of Dover is about 13 miles and the Channel Tunnel terminal at Cheriton is about 22 miles distant. The new Thanet Parkway Station also facilitates rapid access to London by rail.
