Description

Fine & Country are delighted to present Dove House. Beautifully refurbished in 2021, Grade II listed Dove House sits behind delicate iron railings, nodular flints framing its pointed arch casement windows and is a charming blend of period features and stylish modern living. A short walk from the high street, with driveway parking and an enclosed rear garden.

‘A delightful and deceptively spacious house in an amazing location close to Marlborough’s High Street. I love the charming flint detailing and wisteria to the front, and the large kitchen diner to the rear is a wonderful light-filled space overlooking the rear garden.’

Seller Insight:

What is your favourite room in the house and why?

Without doubt, the kitchen. When we bought the property the kitchen was dark, dated and enclosed. We wanted to create an open airy space that had access to the patio and garden to enable easy transition and an in/out dining/living environment. The kitchen is now the heart of the house and the main communal area where the family gathers.

Who do you think will be the ideal new owner?

We think the house would be brilliant for a number of owners who are looking for a property with real character but modern features. A family with school age children would love it here as the construct of the house and the location are brilliant; 3 of the 4 bedrooms have a bathroom, there is a great garden and the main secondary school in the area is within walking distance. Moreover, the town centre is a 10 minute walk away allowing children to meet up easily with friends or for parent to easily walk to/from the town. Equally, professional couples will love the central location, multiple parking capacity and proximity to rail hubs.

It’s a very social house – so people who enjoy entertaining and hosting friends would love Dove House.

What do you love most and why?

The character. The original house was built in the 18th Century and that provenance remains in the house today. It’s such a unique place to live. We also love how walkable everything is – and how cosy it feels in wintertime, and yet, at the same time has enough space for everyone.

What do you love about the local community?

How safe it is as an area, how vibrant it feels and what a warm place full of community spirit Marlborough is.

How easy is it to commute from here?

Great Bedwyn is the nearest train station that runs to London and that is a 10 minute drive away. The M4 is 15 minutes away.

What made you choose this property over others?
It was about the character combined with the location. This is such a unique house with a great layout inside. It is characterful with lots of original features but it could also feel modern. Having a lovely garden and ample parking completed the package.

Accommodation Summary:

Beautifully refurbished in 2021, Grade II listed Dove House sits behind delicate iron railings, nodular flints framing its pointed arch casement windows and is a charming blend of period features and stylish modern living. A short walk from the high street, with driveway parking and a very private rear garden.

Ground Floor:

Entering via the Carpenter Gothic style porch, the charming half panelled entrance hall leads straight through to the rear of the house to the fabulous 26-foot kitchen/breakfast room. Stylishly re-fitted to include beautiful features such as William Morris splash backs and bespoke oak carpentry. The kitchen is flooded with light and in the summer months throw open the double aspect doors to the garden and bring the outside in! At the front of the house are 2 reception rooms with features including parquet flooring, half panelling, period dome dolly switches, built in storage and a log burner. A storage/pantry and cloakroom complete the ground floor.

First Floor:

With three ensuite double bedrooms, there is the potential to make a large main bedroom suite incorporating the 4th bedroom as a dressing room. All bedrooms are beautifully presented with newly fitted bathrooms.

Outside:

With a charming façade, Dove House really catches the eye with the flint nodule detailing around the windows, established wisteria and attractive iron railings with front gate. Directly to the side of the house is a gravelled bay with parking for two vehicles, and a side gate offers access into the garden and house.

The rear garden is totally enclosed, and the substantial patio leading off the kitchen is a great space for catching the sun and unwinding after a hard day at work.

Location:

The amenities in Marlborough are plentiful, it boasts the second widest high street in the UK, and is host to a fantastic range of shops, cafes, restaurants, public houses and an independent cinema, all within a very short walk of the front door of Dove House. These all help Marlborough retain its character and charm. The picturesque historic high street itself provides many interesting and architecturally important buildings and hosts twice weekly market to this day selling everything from fruit and veg to hardware and garden furniture.

The local pub, The Roebuck has just undergone extensive refurbishment and offers a pleasant environment for a drink and offers a range of food including their popular Sunday roasts.

There is excellent schooling at all levels locally in both the state and private sectors with secondary provision at St. John’s Academy, Dauntsey’s and Marlborough College. The surrounding countryside is a huge draw to the area, with country walks, bike rides and other outdoor pursuits all readily available. Direct rail services to London Paddington are available from Bedwyn, Hungerford and Swindon, with the fastest journey times under 1 hour.
