Description

Milton Manor is situated in a stunning and elevated position commanding a panoramic view over farmland to the north and west. It is believed that the house originally dates from the 16th century and was added to in the 17th and 18th century, but it is essentially Georgian in character. It has a most attractive stone front elevation with stone mullion windows under drip mouldings. The present owner purchased the property in 2002 when the property was in need of considerable updating. The house has since been most sympathetically improved and all features to the period very carefully and thoughtfully renovated. There are beamed ceilings with good ceiling height, window shutters and window seats, period fireplaces, and painted panelled walls.

The interior is light and the atmosphere is warm and friendly, and the accommodation well presented. There is a lovely outlook from all the rooms, which are well proportioned. The drawing room has an inglenook fireplace fitted with a log burning stove. The sitting room is a pretty room with painted 17th century panelled walls and a shell hood recess with scalloped shelves. The study also has painted panelled walls and the breakfast kitchen has a wood floor with purpose built painted wood units, and integrated appliances include a range cooker. The utility room has 2 washing machines, 2 dishwashers and a tumble dryer.

Two staircases, with attractive balustrades, rise to the first and second floors. The southwest wing on the first floor is arranged as the principal suite although the dressing could provide a further bedroom. Two staircases rise to an excellent and charming second floor.

Milton Manor is approached over a large entrance drive providing parking for a number of vehicles, in front of a substantial range of excellent stone and tile outbuildings. The main range is arranged as an L-shape forming a courtyard and include stables, workshops and log stores. There is a detached stone and tile single garage, a garden store and outside WC. In all they amount to about 2,389 sq ft.

The walled front garden with stone finials has a cross stone pathway, with lawn on either side, leading to the front door, and to either side of the property. There are triangular shaped shrubbery beds. A stone wall spans the width of the south east boundary, at the front.

At the rear of the property is an excellent large and sheltered flagged courtyard area flanked by a wing of the house on either side, creating an ideal area for entertaining with a spectacular view, over extensive lawn and paddock. The immediate garden close to the house, has low stone walls, raised stone beds and borders, box hedging, pond, and stone pathways. Mature trees intersperse the lawn including Yew and Cedar. To the south west is a small stone and tile outbuilding, and a mixed copse. There is a small former stone pig sty in the north corner of the garden.

The paddock adjoins the garden to the north west with vehicular access from the garden. In all the property extends to 7.29 acres.

Upper Milton is a most attractive hamlet comprising stone period houses and cottages. It is situated on the southern slopes of the Mendip Hills only about 1 mile north of Wells. Milton Manor is in a lovely rural setting backing onto farmland, and has a spectacular view particularly to the west, over a valley of unspoilt countryside. The hamlet is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Wells, the smallest city in England, is only a mile away. There is a wide and interesting variety of shops, cafés, restaurants, supermarkets including a Waitrose, a theatre and cinema, and medical and dental practices.
There are a number of primary schools in Wells. Independent schooling is available at Wells Cathedral, Millfield at Street and Sidcot Quaker School at Sidcot. The secondary Blue School in Wells is well respected.
